Was on my up from Malibu today and stopped by to get a few shots. The waves were small for the most part but a few nice sets came in. The following were with a 300mm I wanted to give a good trial run with and think it does a nice job. Somebody may want to help out with a few names. All strangers to me ;-)

Thanks Jon. The light was perfect as was about 3:30 on for these. Exposures were just right and barely needed to do a thing but sharpen the raw files. I was right on the edge of the rocks at the high tide line right in front of the rock outcropping. Actually first time I've ever been on the beach there. Great waves considering the size everywhere else and I'de even take a few sails and my 9 ft slalom board as the wind was good too.

Give me even one of those smaller waves here in SB and I'll be setting my alarm for 5AM.

Great shots, John. As with Brian, I'm jonesing for some 'better' quality waves. Drove down to Oxnard today and found nada, and didn't want to go all the way to County to see if there was something slightly better.
#1 looks to be Pascal Stansfield. Beyond that, I'm tapped out.

Probably a good call not heading further south. Most everything south was meager yesterday all the way south to Malibu. Leo C. had the best in the afternoon. Plenty of lulls with just a foot or two but then a set would come through every 10 minutes or so with a waist-chest high wave while I was there.

lil' Mermaid,
I didn't shoot manual but aperture priority at F3.2, 1/2000-1/3200, iso 200. Nice to have the afternoon sun.

I would go to your User CP and select Edit Options and look at your subscribe settings.
Regarding manual, I still do that with my manual cameras and light meter and at times with my D300. Most stuff I shoot now is constantly changing in lighting so have learned to trust what the camera does. If doing landscape or a more static shot I'de be moe apt to use manual... focus as well.
