and just below you and the NBC crew. Probably the same drop and wouldn't you know it I think I dropped my monopod bag under my van when I drove away. Now do I burn up some fuel and see if anyone stole it?

Question: Are they dropping the fire retardent stuff ON the fire, or around it to prevent it from moving forward?

Hard to say but it's blown literally right by. Over 50 mph winds now. Black skies Goleta to SB. Old San Marcos closed and is the new fire line. From Jon and my vantage point on Painted Cave flames as of 7pm cresting the ridge just west of the Trout Club and the shack on that ridge we watched the guy evacuate as the flames hit the rideg with copter dropping overhead. We both have picks coming.
We noted 2 sets of flames all the way down and just about at 192 so wind is blowing embers hard. A tough night ahead it looks like. Total change from 2:30 with easterly winds and few plumes of smoke. Wind changed and picked up hard.

I just got home; it was absolutely crazy out there. This was our vantage point for quite a while:

Well found the bag I was seeking when I drove back up there...on my chair at home ;-) Good to see you Jon.
A few pics....
This house most see when they turn up the last switchback. Around 7pm was looking pretty gloomy in the canyon adjacent to it...

Big copters late afternoon were still flying... Enhanced the color a bit as on the way home it really did have a brown ashen look to the sky.

A few shots like Jon's, showing the smaller SBC copters covering this small home on the ridge as the owners scrambled to evacuate just prior to the flames coming up and over...

Amazing photos everyone. Let's hope the firefighting crews can contain this soon. I remember the Painted cave fire in 1990. I was driving on 101 with my wife and two dogs and we were forced to exit at El Sueno because the flames were jumping the highway right in front of us.
Hang in there everyone!

Holy crap, you guys and gals, we arrive in SB in one week! We've never been to CA and my wife is freaked out. Will these fires be under control soon or do they take time to run their course?
Any rain in the forecast? How long does the air quality suffer aftereffects? It is quite admirable that you take these things in stride, or so it seems. Amazing pics, by the way, but to be honest this is not the type of awesome sights we were expecting to see during our visit!
Is this more fires than ever before? Climate change? Drought? Prior decades of man's suppression of natural fires? What do you think is the cause?

i think we can trace this fire back to the freedom-hating french, and partially to Al Gore...but there are speculations.
seriously though, downtown SB is fine, once you get about 10 minutes north on the 101 or into the mountains is where youll find the fire and the heavier ash; the air quality is not too good, but like I said downtown is pretty fine...I havent had a problem breathing to this point and live in an evacuation warning area.
Don't postpone your trip unless the fire grows, the last two days have been positive ones for fighting it (a bit of help from this onshore stuff)!
