someone please explain this fun shape business...
I have never seen a fun shape actually function well, maybe its the kooks that tend to ride these boards or maybe its the lack of wave judgment and selection. where on earth would you choose to ride a fun shape over any other board?

im not a funshaper myself...but i do know a few people who like to ride them every now and then.
i guess my only real argument FOR them is that if you can only have a few boards and want to cover all the bases, youd be pretty well off with a longboard, shortboard and funboard...although id choose an egg myself over the funboard...for the older or middleaged guys who ride thrusters, it makes sense sometimes.

Has anyone here seen Lauren Yater at Hammonds or Rincon on one of his funshapes, he tears it up. I've had one in my quiver for the last 15 years and I love to get out on it. They ride like a short board but you can walk on them like a longboard.

phil becker is proably single handily responsible for the fun shape aka mid-sized board evolution. since circa 1980

The first fun-shape I ever rode was at El Capitan beach break in the early eighties (it use to be good) and it was a Becker. The RipCurl rep at that time had one and he let me try it. I've liked them ever since.

http://santabarbarasurfer.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=281&stc=1&d=1200667785i, too, owned many Becker LC - 3 (rounded nose) and SPEED SHAPE (semi-pointed) funboards during the same time...i liked them so much that i eventually had many shaping sessions with Phil himself to continue the magic. Phil is a great guy with an unreal work ethic, though now he is semi-retired and spending time between his hawaiian, hermosa and costa rica properties.

In my short time surfing, I've loved my 9'0 Progressive.
My brother in law recently let me borrow a 7'6" Becker, and it's pretty fun. It's still long enough for me to move a little on, but short enough to get up some speed and the turns are quick! I can understand why people would like shorter boards. I think it's as short as I'd want to go, though. I still like my longboard best for now.
