Yea, Mexico is no place to mess with. I have heard plenty of stroies from people about how corrupted the police there are.

with the swell running like it is, my son was just mentioning vamos san miguel (we use to own casa nueve) but i've been following this blood trail, too, for awhile and i can only shed tears of lament for the norte baja california waves we have all come to love...

I'm heading to the Mazatlan area for a surf trip in April. Any negative press that you all are aware of? I know about Baja Norte, but haven't heard any word about the Mainland in mid-Mexico.

Despite the fact that it doesn't look to be the optimal swell window for that area, I'm in. Any words of advice??

Try The Frog Legs

EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thanks!

Anyone else hear of any negative press in Central Mainland, versus Baja Norte?

Growing up in San Diego, always had buddies running down for weekend waves, and heard stories all the time. I always just surfed the 1000 spots in SD and scored good waves. I don't doubt the quality of waves in baja, but my ability to handle the crowds sure pays off now. How you seen Rincon these past few days!?!? What a zoo!

Baja use to be SO incredible. It's too bad it has become so unsafe and unfriendly. I'm still down to go - the surf is incredible just need to take the "extra" protection!:D

La Frontera (the border) is the most dangerous place historically. That's where I've run into "Problems". Mainland shouldn't be too bad.

Best advice is don't drive at night.

Don't get drunk and wild either.

Don't leave valuables in you car.

Yep, those are all great pieces of advice I always dole out for border surfing. No driving at night; don't be a gringo & get drunk in public; never speed; don't get the ceviche or the fish soup, no matter how good it looks.

As for advice at the border, the best piece I ever heard was to carry a bible with you. Put some spare $$ in there. Then, if you are pulled over by Federales, to pay off their bribe you have to grab your Bible & slowly start pulling some $1s, $5s, and $10s out of here & there. Being members of a religious culture, it makes them uncomfortable to be stealing from the Good Book. Usually it cuts down on the amount you'll have to pay.;) I liked that one, but fortunately haven't had to use it yet.

Road side food stands are normally bad places to eat.

Ceviche however, provided you know the forensics--the chain of evidence can be worth the risk. For example I've had it off the beach where I saw the fish before they filleted it.

Make sure the fish has clear eyes, glistening skin, isn't too rigid and you even smell inside the gills.
