With the proliferation of surf VIDEO, do they still make surf movies shown in local theaters? Shot on 16mm? That was, at one time, an integral part of the culture. It would be such a treat to see Gerry Lopez surfing huge pipe. Now, you can watch any surfer, alive or dead, with the click of the mouse.

Surf movies were such events and so much fun to attend. I hope it hasn't been lost to the digital age.

I saw "One California Day" at the Arlington Theater a few months ago, and it was completely sold out. Filmed in 16mm HD, it was a throwback to the classic old school surf films that I grew up with back in the 70's. Back in the day, the Lobero was the place to see film's like "5 Summer Stories", "Super Session", The Forgotten Island of Santosha" -- all great films. Bring back the genre cuz the videos just aren't the same...

I saw "One California Day" at the Arlington. It was my first time seeing a surf film in a theater and it was a great experience. There's something about the energy of 2,000 or so people in a room with the same passion. I met the film makers after the movie. They were great guys. I liked seeing all the familiar faces in the crowd in their street clothes, too! Hopefully there will be more theater showings in the near future. Way more fun than sitting in front of my TV.

Oh yeah, those were the days. The aroma of pot in the air, the moment the first frame hit the screen and the energetic uproar of hoots and hollers. It seems like it was just yesterday, boy I miss that experience.

That's how it was!!!

They were tough crowds too, I remember one surf movie had a clip of a kneeboarder, and everyone started screaming "Stand up!"

A major motion picture "Bra Boys" is almost out. Let's hope it works like Big Wednesday and not Point Break... There's also the new ARCHY movie too. I posted some info on my blog today if you are interested: www.rinconsurfblog.com

It's a documentary I thought?

Well, it is, but if you watch the trailer, it's a real movie. The fictitious characters portrayed in Milius' Big Wedsnesday were pretty much based on real characters. Bra Boys looks to be epic. Too bad not based on characters we're familiar with...
