Kiters must be loving all of this wind that La Nina has brought with her lately...

WATER RESCUE

Two kite surfers near Del Playa Drive in Isla Vista had to be rescued Wednesday after they lost control and started heading out to sea.

Capt. Eli Iskow, spokesman for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, said rescue personnel got word from a passerby at about noon that the two men were "in distress" and heading out to sea.

"One self-rescued, but the other had to be rescued with a paddle boat," Capt. Iskow said. He said a UCSB ambulance came to check out the surfers. One was not hurt and the condition of the other is not known.

County firefighters work to rescue one of two kite surfers who were being blown out to sea Wednesday. Above, the surfer rests atop a rescue board with a firefighter as the pair await a jet ski to pull them to shore. Below, firefighters recover the kite after severing it from the surfer.

I saw an ambulance + police car at campus point yesterday parked near the road end. Wonder if they are related.

You should be glad you didn't go out as the wind turned off shore real quick.

quite a few kites came down, then the wind picked up strong offshore.

There are alot of people in the sport that end up in situations like this because of their lack of experience. In most situations it is possible to roll up your gear and paddle in (I've had to do it before when it went off shore and got puffy). If this continues to happen the sport will get banned like it has in many places, it has been discussed by the city for Leadbetter. It pisses me off that the sport is given disrespect because yuppies that can afford the gear get into it with no background in surfing or sailing.

Kitesurfing is badass. Nowadays the heavies are doing it at Mav's when it's pumping. Unbelieveable...
