View Full Version : Do you surf after a heavy rain?
There's supposed to be some solid groundswell tomorrow, and if it cleans up, it could be really good. Part of me is ready to charge at dawn, while another part of me says, "you've got to wait at least 72 hours knucklehead, do you want to get sick?"
Due to the present drought, local creeks haven't had a good flush for almost 2 years. Ashe from the Zaca Fire is also going to dump all kinds of pollutants into the water as well (ashe, fire-retardant chemicals, ...etc.).
Hepatitis? Staph? WTF?!?!
What are your thoughts around this issue?

im semi-hesitant at first, but really dont care much in the end...even if i get sick (like the last time), im stoked knowing how good the waves were whilst acquiring the sniffles.
although last time i surfed rincon after the rain, my brnad new white board turned brown under 6" of water...eeeeeew

Listen guys, I'm a PHD, and please, for god's sake, NEVER NEVER NEVER surf during or after a rain. Hepatitis is fatal. You will die. 100%.
Also, NEVER surf on a Sunny day, the sun will give you skin cancer, you will DIE. I guarantee it. I also discourage you from surfing overcast days, the UV rays still penetrate and you'll get skin cancer. You'll die. I guarantee it.
Please, I implore you, only surf at night. That's the only way you can be safe. It's particularly important to follow these rules at Rincon.

I agree with staying out of the water after it rains. I would never go into the water after a big storm. The is no way of getting immune to Hepatitis and it is not something to mess with.
But as for surfing on a overcast day, can't sunscreen protect you if it is applied regularly?

I was wondering the same thing, I've heard the 72 hour rule, and if there was a triathlon today, they probably would have cancelled the ocean or other natural body of water swim, however that said, there were a handful of peeps at rincon (not anywhere else further south though) when I drove past today midday... keep your mouth shut and take some echinacea, zinc, vitamin C whatever... if my board wasn't broken I'd have been tempted since I can only go out on weekends.... thanks for the laughs though! I'll be sure to disregard the doctor's advice... heehee

I've been vaccinated for both hepatitis A and B, and maybe even C due to far flung travels, so I should be covered.....
