Last November marked the 3 year anniversary of the death of Ray Kunze, the real life Malibu Enforcer from "Big Wednesday". Ray was a great guy and icon from the early days of Malibu and Gidget.A lot of people knew him as the gatekeeper of the Hollister ranch.

I knew Ray really well but not as a surfer, I knew Ray as a Fireman. A job Ray and I both did for a long time. Ray broke me in with the Lynwood Fire Department. I was assigned to him and he taught me so much about how to attack a fire, and how to stay alive, how to work hard. I remember a veteran captain telling me Ray was the "Best Fireman the department had ever had".
Lynwood, for the record, in the 1980's at least, was a nasty patch of ghetto surrounded by Compton and Watts. Hardcore. Ray was the real deal, in the water, on the fireground, or just sitting around the kitchen table. He told me once how to get along with people, he said be "The humble greatest". That's exactly the way Ray acted. We miss ya dude.

See it! It's a lot of fun. It also fully mythologized Gerry Lopez.
